Walker Summer Research Awards
A summer research award is available to Chemistry and Biochemistry students to provide them with the opportunity to gain paid research experience in a Chemistry or Biochemistry faculty member’s research lab over the summer months. Read more here about the Walker Summer Research Award.
Scholarships and Awards
The chemistry department is also very fortunate to have one of the most generous scholarship programs in Canada. Each year the Department nominates deserving students for the following scholarships and other awards that are awarded to students in either the Chemistry program or in a specific Chemistry stream of study. No application is required on the part of the student.
Motoshi Asano Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a student in a Chemistry program. Preference is given to a full time student in physical spectroscopy….Endowed 1984
Alexis Bawagan Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Chemistry to an outstanding student who has successfully completed the first-year chemistry course designed for engineers. Established in 2014 by the family of Dr. Alexis Bawagan to commemorate his long association with Carleton University as professor, researcher and active member of the Carleton University community.
Berke Scholarship in Chemistry
Awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to the Second year of an Honours Chemistry program….Endowed 1981
Dr. M. Ralph Berke Award in Chemistry
Awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Chemistry proceeding from the Second to the Third year of the degree program…. Endowed 1956
The CSC (Canadian Society for Chemistry) Medal
Awarded to the student obtaining the highest academic standing in the penultimate year in the Honours Chemistry program….. Established 1950
Society of Chemical Industry Award (1-year journal subscription)
Awarded to the student with the highest standing in the Final year of the Honours Chemistry program. The winner also receives a gold key engraved with his/her name, the course, year, and University….. Established 1961
Dr. Reginald T. Elworthy Award in Chemistry
Awarded to an outstanding student in Second Year Physical Chemistry who is continuing in the Honours Chemistry program….. Endowed 1987
E. Alison Flood Award in Physical Chemistry
Awarded to a student who shows promise in the area of Physical Chemistry. Preference is given to a student in the Second year Physical Chemistry course who is proceeding to the Third year of a Science program….. Endowed 1980
Professor James M. Holmes Scholarship in Chemistry
Awarded to an outstanding student proceeding from the Second to the Third year of an Honours Chemistry program….. Endowed 1984
Janet M. Holmes Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a promising student proceeding from the Third to the Fourth year of the Honours Chemistry program…… Established 1973
Donald R. Wiles Scholarship in Chemistry
Awarded to a student proceeding from First year to Second year of an Honours program in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or any combined program with Chemistry. Preference is given to a student intending to study inorganic or analytical chemistry…… Endowed 1990
Peeter Kruus Memorial Scholarship – alternates yearly between Technology Society Environment and Chemistry Students
Awarded annually, in alternate years to an undergraduate student studying Technology, Society, Environment – Energy & Sustainability or to an undergraduate student studying Environmental Science – Foundations for Environmental Chemistry. If an eligible student from one course is not found, the scholarship may be offered to an eligible student in the other course. The scholarship was establiched in memory of Peeter Kruus to recognize the outstanding contribution he made to Carleton University and the academic community as a teacher and scholar. Endowed in 2005 by friends and family of Peeter Kruus.
Josef Dlouhy Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry
Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry, to a student proceeding from First to Second year of an Honours program in Chemistry or any Combined Honours program in Chemistry. Preference will be given to a student intending to study inorganic or analytical chemistry. Endowed in 1997 by Dr. Joseph Dlouhy in honour and memory of his father Josef Dlouhy.
Geoff Wightman Award in Chemistry
Awarded annually, when merited, to one or more outstanding full-time students in the Honours Chemistry program or Biochemistry program who has completed the Introductory Organic Chemistry course or a 3000 level course in Organic Chemistry. Endowed in 1997 by Robert and Peggy Wightman in memory of their son.
